CRE II - Isothermal Rector Design

Design and Operation of Isothermal Reactors. Molar Balances, Conversion & Sizing

Course Description

This program offers a comprehensive exploration of various reactor types and their design principles.

Students delve into:

  • Batch Reactors, analyzing both first and second-order reactions,
  • Gain insight into Continuous Stirred-Tank Reactors (CSTRs), emphasizing the significance of the Dahmkohler number and space time considerations.
  • Analysis of the Plug Flow Reactors (PFR) , examining their application in first and second-order reactions across liquid and gas phases while addressing pressure loss effects.
  • Furthermore, Packed Bed Reactors (BPR) are explored in depth, encompassing first and second-order reactions alongside catalyst bed considerations and pressure drop calculations utilizing the Ergun equation.

Through this course, students develop a nuanced understanding of isothermal reactor design, enabling them to make informed decisions in reactor selection and optimization for various chemical processes.

Learn about:

  • Chemical Reactor Engineering Methodology
  • Batch Reactor in 1st and 2nd Order. Phases: Liquid and Gas
  • CSTR in 1st, 2nd and 3rd Order. Phases: Liquid
  • Dahmkohler Numer for multiple CSTR in series.
  • PFR in 1st and 2nd Order. Phases: Liquid and Gas. Pressure Loss Effects
  • PBR in 1st and 2nd Order.
  • The nature of catalyst, catalysts beds and pressure drop involved
  • Pressure Drop calculations with Ergun's Equation
  • Semi-continuous operation of common reactors

At the end of the Course:

You will feel more confident understanding, modeling, designing and operating Chemical Reactors. You will be able to identify and understand the importance of such unit operations. You'll be able to perform proper pressure drop calculations as well as selecting the optimal reactor for the given operation.
